In recent years, for a walk support of the visually impaired, an electronic white cane which has ultrasonic sensors has developed and is in the market. This cane is able to detect an obstacle which is not able to be detected by an ordinary white cane. However, the cane also detects an obstacle which is not danger to the user because of wide measurement area of ultrasonic sensor. Then, we proposed an electronic white cane which had infrared distance sensors and motion sensor to inform the user of necessary information about obstacle. In this paper, optimal sensor arrangement was obtained by a simulation firstly, and efficacy of our proposition was investigated after making a trial manufacture. From the experimental results, our cane could detect obstacles while walking in the limited experimental condition. |
