Identifying neural correlates for statistical word segmentation in Macaque Monkeys

(in English) Human beings can learn word segmentation from continuous tone sequences based on transitional probability, and its event related potential has been reported. On the other hand, it is not yet well understood whether other animals can learn such segmentation and possess any neural correlates of it. In this study, we aimed to confirm existence of neural correlates for segmentation in macaque monkeys and identify them by decoding the information about segments from multichannel electrocorticogram signals. Our results show that decoding with significant accuracy can be achieved and suggest that the non-human primates possess mechanism that make statistical segmentation possible.
