FePd, FePt, and CoPt alloy epitaxial thin films with L10 structure are prepared on (001) single-crystal substrates of MgO, SrTiO3, and LaAlO3 by using an ultra-high vacuum radio-frequency magnetron sputtering system. The c-axis destitution and the film surface flatness are controlled. FePd films formed on MgO and SrTiO3 substrates consist of L10(001) single-crystal with the c-axis normal to the film surface, whereas an FePd film formed on LaAlO3 substrate and FePt and CoPt films formed on all the substrates involve two types of L10(100) crystal with the c-axis lying in the film plane in addition to L10(001) crystal. The c-axis distribution is influenced by the combination of film and substrate materials. Higher order degrees are observed in the film material order of CoPt < FePt < FePd and the substrate material order of LaAlO3 < SrTiO3 < MgO. A two-step preparation method consisting of low-temperature deposition at 200 °C followed by high-temperature annealing at 600 °C is proposed in order to form L10 ordered films with flat surfaces. When FePd films are prepared on MgO substrates by the two-step method, the c-axis is also controlled to the perpendicular to the substrate surface. The order degrees of films prepared by two-step method are almost similar to those of films formed by one-step method consisting of deposition at 600 °C (S = 0.6–0.7). The films of thicknesses ranging from 5 to 40 nm prepared by the two-step method have very flat surfaces with the arithmetical mean roughness value lower than 0.2 nm, whereas rough surfaces involving facets are formed for the films prepared by the one-step method. The two-step method is effective for preparation of flat ultra-thin films with L10 structure. |
