A study on evaluation method of atmospheric propagation delay in DME/DME positioning as backup for GNSS based aircraft operation

(in English) Aircraft navigation which relies on GNSS will be available in the near future. Therefore, safety and minimization of the economic impacts will be required in the case of loss of GNSS signals. FAA (Federal Aviation Administration of United States) has started some researches to construct systems for alternates position, navigation and timing. Optimizing the current DME network for DME/DME positionings is a trongly recommended candidate, since the costs and times of the development can be reduced. However, the nominal performances of DME may not satisfy the requirement of alternates position, navigation and timing. So, some researchers confirm the actual performances of the currently used DMEs and improve the DME performances. It is considered that atmospheric propagation delays effect on DME performances because of long distance propagations between DMEs and airplanes at low angles. In this paper, the authors clarify the effect of the atmospheric propagation delays on the DME performances.
