Working-memory load and left-corner parsing in Japanese sentence processing

(in English) We provide experimental evidence supporting left-corner parsing (LCP; e.g., Abney & Johnson, 1991) as a better candidate for simulating how people understand sentences compared to alternatives such as bottom-up parsing and top-down parsing. In LCP, the top TP node and its VP node are not connected until the verb is read. Therefore, a VP-internal adjunct increases the memory cost for other VP-internal constituents (e.g., NP-dat), but not for elements outside the VP node (e.g., NP-nom). This leads to the prediction that the reading times to a VP-internal adjunct should be longer when the sentence-initial NP is dative than when it is nominative. We report self-paced reading data supporting this prediction in line with a processing model in which working-memory load depends on the syntactic representation built at each point. The result provides a counterexample to processing models in which working-memory load is determined by dependency relations alone (e.g., Nakatani & Gibson, 2010).
