Suboptimal MIMO Signal Detection Employing Multi-Stream Constrained Search -- Principle of Multi-Stream Constrained Search --

(in English) The maximum likelihood detection (MLD) is the optimal signal detection for MIMO communications, but its computational complexity is prohibitive when the number of transmit antennas or the modulation order are large. To overcome this problem, the multi-dimensional search (MDS) has been proposed. MDS sets a minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detection result to the starting point, and searches for signal candidates in dominant directions of the noise enhancement, under the constraint that one transmitted stream should be a constellation point. Although MDS can achieve a good trade-off between bit error rate (BER) and computational complexity, the complexity is still large because it requires the eigenvalue decomposition. In this report, we propose multi-stream constrained search (MSCS) that sets an MMSE detection result to the starting point, and searches for signal candidates, under the constraint that plural transmitted stream should be constellation points. Since MSCS does not require the eigenvalue decomposition, it can achieve less computational complexity than MDS when one stream is constrained. In addition, MSCS can extend the number of constrained streams to plural. Computer simulations demonstrate that MSCS can achieve almost the same average BER performance as MLD while searching for extremely less signal candidates.
