[Tutorial Lecture] Introduction to Computational Complexity Theory (4): Barriers in Proving the Limits of Computation

(in English) The P != NP conjecture states that deterministic computation cannot efficiently simulate non-deterministic computation. Over the last half century, the conjecture has been studied by many researchers as one of the most important unsolved problems in computation theory. However, we have not found a promising way to resolve the conjecture. In this talk, I will give an overview of three known barriers in proving the limits of computation such as P != NP, i.e., "relativization," "natural proof" and "algebrization." These barriers explain why we cannot prove P != NP by only extending existing proof techniques. On the other hand, several frameworks for avoiding such barriers were proposed. If time permits, I will talk about some of them.
