Ambient Sound-based Proximity Detection with Smartphones

(in English) The proximity information is valuable for various applications such as analysis of human communication, indoor localization. To realize high accuracy proximity detection, We focus on ambient sound which involves
abundant information based on time and space. By improving energy efficiency of smartphones, the system which covers a wide range can be built without infrastructure. This paper presents a system design and experimental evaluations for ambient sound-based proximity detection with smartphones. Regarding energy efficiency and time-varying characteristic of ambient sound, we adopt synchronized and short-time recording. To detect proximity at high accuracy with short-time record, we execute rejection of microphone's offset and emphasize high frequency region. The results of experiments show that our system discriminates 5 rooms with the accuracy of precision 95.7%, recall 95.6%, and F-measure 95.6.
