Phase-reduction analysis of coupled limit-cycle oscillators in hybrid dynamical systems

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Hybrid dynamical systems, possessing both characteristics of discrete and continuous dynamical systems, is often used to model temporally multi-scale systems, which show instantaneous systemic changes. Many hybrid dynamical systems in mechanical, electrical, and biological systems exhibit rhythmic activities, whose synchronization phenomena have various functional meaning. In the preceding report [Shirasaka et al., IEICE, 112, 487, pp.55-58, 2013], we extended the phase reduction method, which is a general mathematical framework for analyzing synchronization properties of nonlinear oscillators, to the hybrid dynamical systems and demonstrated that the proposed method nicely works for the analysis of injection locking phenomena of stable hybrid limit-cycle oscillators to external periodic signals. In this report, we analyze coupled hybrid limit-cycle oscillators by the extended phase reduction method, and derive the condition for the frequency mismatch to achieve synchronization and
the stable phase differences between the oscillators. From the proposed phase reduction method, we found the possibility that the frequency mismatch has no influence on the stable phase difference in some pulse-coupled oscillators, which is a distinctive synchronization property in hybrid dynamical systems.
