Evaluation of Energy Efficient Inter-frequency Small Cell Search Scheme using Radio Frequency Fingerprint in Millimeter-wave Heterogeneous Networks

(in English) Deployment of small cells with ultra wideband using a higher carrier frequency over the traditional macro cells operated at lower frequency is an attractive solution for network operators to enable users’ traffic to offload from macro to small cells. In order to realize such a solution, User Equipment (UE) connecting to macro cells needs to discover small cells on different frequencies from macro cells. However, frequent inter-frequency search causes large UE battery power consumption, which makes the study of small cell search techniques important. For LTE small cells, one possible solution is based on so-called “radio frequency fingerprint (RFF),” which has been discussed in 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). Recently, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) based heterogeneous networks (HetNet), where mm-wave frequency is applied to small cells, has been explored to provide a massive amount of unlicensed spectrum bandwidth and meet the increasing demands of higher data rate for next generation wireless communication. It is much more difficult for UEs to discover an mm-wave small cell due to considerably small coverage area. In this paper, we consider RFF database based inter-frequency small cell search scheme in mm-wave HetNets and evaluate the performance of two database construction methods through computer simulations.
