Small, low-crosstalk optical switches using III-V CMOS photonics platform

(in English) III-V CMOS photonics is a platform which enables strong optical confinement for the III-V waveguides by using III-V on insulator wafers fabricated by wafer bonding. III-V CMOS photonics also enables monolithic integration of high performance active photonic devices including lasers and modulators and photodetectors, passive photonic-wire waveguides, and CMOS curcuits. In this paper, we have demonstrated carrier-injection type Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical switches on III-V CMOS photonics platform. In spite of its short phase-shifter length of 50 μm, crosstalk was as low as -29 dB, which was about 10 dB better than the theoretical limit in Si optical switches.
