Learning about programming requires the development of two different skills: learning the program syntax necessary to write code to implement the algorithm, and understanding the algorithms. Prior research has extensively studied how to provide individual support for developing these skills. Typically, learners are assigned construction tasks. However, it is important to not only write but also read programs in order to understand programming deeply. In this work, we focus on learning-by-reading in the context of computer programming and propose a process composed of four steps for such learning: algorithm construction, writing a program, reading for comprehension, and deducing meaning. |
