Parsing of Ambiguous Relative Clauses in Japanese -- An Event-related Potentials Study --
Chunhua Bai, Yuki Kobayashi, Yuki Hirose (Univ. of Tokyo) TL2014-12
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Previous studies of Japanese relative clause association suggest that the parser first interprets the RC as modifying the immediately following N1, but ultimately settles on the N2 interpretation by the end of the entire sentence ([2],[3],[4]). A recent study, however, argues that the parser associates the relative clause to N2 without first committing to N1, as long as the N1 is accompanied by the indefinite marker aru ([5]). In the present study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether the N2-modification is computed as an initial analysis, by comparing three conditions, forced high association, forced low association, and ambiguous conditions. Compared to the forced high association condition, we observed the AN effect for the low association condition in the 300–500 ms window and both the N400 and a P600 effect for the ambiguous condition in the300–500 ms and 700–800 ms respectively at N2. These results support the on-line N2 modification preference in Japanese. We also observed a P600 at N2 in the ambiguous condition compared to the forced high condition, indicating there is a cost to processing globally ambiguous material per se.
