Eye Movements During the Processing of Pronominal Relative Clauses by Native and Non-native Speakers of English

(in English) Previous research has shown that object relative clauses are typically more difficult to process than analogous subject relative clauses. However, this processing bias appears to be reversed when the embedded noun phrase of the relative clause is pronominal (e.g., Reali and Christiansen 2007, Roland et al. 2012, Heider et al. 2014). We use data from an eye-tracking study to show that like native speakers of English, non-native speakers of English also show this reversal in bias when reading pronominal relative clauses. Our results also show that, unlike in self-paced reading, the reversal in reading times for pronominal relative clauses occurs entirely at the relative clause noun phrase.
