“Integration” is becoming one of the most important key words in English language learning and education in Japan. In the past decade or so, language proficiency tests started to incorporate more and more “integrated” tasks, where test takes either read or listen to some material presented and then respond in writing or speech. Classes and curricula were divided into skill-based courses and classes were streamlined based on proficiency levels a few decades ago, but in recent years, we see resurgence of “integrated” courses, in which different skills are taught and trained with mixed levels of students in one class. Here, we will discuss yet another case of “integration”.
In earlier studies, we reported a marked difference in the proficiency levels of the same groups of students in terms of their lexical and grammatical knowledge as measured by their scores of Oxford Quick Placement Test, on the one hand, and their listening and speaking proficiency as measured by their scores of Versant English Test, on the other. Although we do not have exhaustive comparable data for the entire Japanese university learners, our experiences and our understanding of the nature of English language education at secondary school levels strongly suggest that such a gap is a general tendency rather than idiosyncratic characteristics found in particular population. We will discuss how these two can be “integrated” into one whole.b |
