Feature extraction of Periodic Discharges (PDs) in the ICU using continuous EEG monitoring

(in English) Continuous electroencephalographic (cEEG) monitoring brings significant information on brain dysfunctions such as cerebral infarction, epileptic seizures, etc., in the intensive care unit (ICU). Usually, interpretation of cEEG is done by a skillful medical doctor, but is laborious and time consuming. Development of computer-assisted system will be useful. The method for detecting abnormal EEG patterns in the ICU was developed. Periodic discharges (PDs) were treated as the target to be detected. Expression of trend graph for their appearance frequencies was also investigated. Proposed method was applied to the data and typical waveform patterns were correctly detected. For the case of nonconvulsive status epilepticus data, trend graph clearly showed the epileptic seizure segments and the result was in good conformity with that of visual inspection.
