Development of an Android application for venous analysis based on the EM algorithm

(in English) An early detection of the deep vein thrombosis becomes crucial especially at the time of disaster. An ultrasonic or X-ray diagnostic equipment is generally used for the assessment of abnormal veins; however, it is difficult for the limited number of medical doctors or experts to diagnose the venous diseases in all victims. Moreover, an easy and efficient application for each user will be required for a daily healthcare monitoring system. This study, therefore, aimed to develop an Android application which can quantify venous features based on image processing and provide a simple user interface for victims or general users. We actually compared venous changes between the rest and physical exercise after pressing the left wrist, in order to evaluate the created application. The Android application with the EM algorithm and an easy interface (e.g., the operation parts of ‘region of interests’ and ‘image analysis’) was able to extract the veins and background areas in each experimental condition, suggesting that the physical exercise promoted blood circulation.
