[Poster Presentation] How mothers communicate with children about death during shared book reading

(in English) This article examines mother-child interactions in regard to death in picture books through the use of an observational study. Participants consisted of 29 mothers and their children (ages 3 years 8 months -6 years 8 months old). Both the mothers and the children reacted to death both verbally and non-verbally and most of the interactions were initiated by the mothers. In regard to the content, mothers referred to the fact that the character had died and non-realistic explanations that the character could go to heaven were seldom found. In addition, the mothers described their impressions of death, with phrases such as "What a pity!" or "very sad." This suggests that mothers’ values in regard to death can be transmitted to the children from the mothers.
