Measurement of mechanical quality factors of polymers in flexural vibration for high power ultrasonic application

(in English) In this study, a method for measuring the mechanical quality factor (Q-factor) in flexural vibration at large vibration amplitude is proposed. Mechanical quality factors (Q factors) of some functional polymers under different driving frequencies and vibration velocities are measured. In this method, Q factor is calculated precisely from the vibration velocity distribution on a vibrating thin bar, being based on the original definition of Q factor, which is the ratio of the maximum reactive energy to the dissipated energy. The experimental results show that the Q factors of the polymers decrease as the driving frequency and the vibration velocity increase. The Q factor of polyphenylenesulfide (PPS) reached approximate 350 when the vibration velocity was smaller than 300 mm/s and the frequency was lower than 40 kHz, which is larger than other tested polymers. The experimental results imply that PPS is a potentially applicable material as elastomer for power ultrasonic devices.
