A self-injection locking is one of phase noise improvement methods for an oscillator. A conventional self-injection locked oscillator uses a long coaxial cable or a long transmission line in order to delay a feedback signal. When the feedback is in-phase injection, a self-injection locking reduces phase noise of a free-running oscillator. If the oscillation frequency is swept, the feedback needs phase-shift control. This paper describes that an injection locked VCO works as a phase-shifter in the feedback of a self-injection locked VCO which constitutes ring topology of injection locked VCOs.
A prototype of the 0.18um SiGe BiCMOS ring type self-injection locked VCO achieves the oscillation bandwidth of 7.21 GHz to 8.28 GHz (fractional bandwidth: 13.8%), which is approximately equal to fractional bandwidth of the free-running VCO, and the phase noise lower than -98.8dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from the carrier which is improved by about 6dB. |
