In-vehicle networks interconnect electronic control units (ECUs) in vehicles.
Controller area network (CAN) is one of standards for in-vehicle networks and is widely employed.
However, the weight and space of wiring harness among CAN devices increase with becoming higher-performance networks.
In this manuscript, we propose power over CAN (PoCAN), which is an implementation method of power over data lines (PoDL),
for twisted-pair (TP) cables among CAN devices to reduce the power lines where PoDL is under the review in IEEE P802.3bu.
Unipolar non-return-to-zero (NRZ) line codes are employed in CAN and include mainly direct current (DC) component in the signals so that power superposed unipolar NRZ codes will not be suitable for PoDL.
Bipolar alternate make inversion (AMI) and NRZ line codes are exploited for PoCAN because AMI-NRZ codes do not include DC component.
The waveforms of CAN and PoCAN are analyzed in bus networks complied by a CAN standard with an analog mixed-signal (AMS)simulator.
The results show that the proposed PoCAN can achieve the simultaneous transmission of data and DC power in one-pair TP cables. |
