[Technology Exhibit] Development of LTE/WiGig interworking heterogeneous networks

(in English) The LTE technology has widely been used for offering mobile broadband access. The radio specification of LTE is optimized for the use with lower than 6GHz frequency that have good propagation properties to provide connectivity for mobile users. However, the new frequency bands above 6GHz, such as millimeter-wave, where large bandwidth is available, should be exploited to deal with the increasing traffic demands. Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) is an available millimeter-wave radio access technology that can achieve very high throughput. However, the coverage of WiGig access points is very limited due to the propagation properties of millimeter wave. Therefore, the heterogeneous network of LTE and WiGig interworking is a promising solution to achieve large capacity by offloading user-plane traffic to WiGig while keeping control-plane connectivity with LTE. This paper presents our developed proof-of-concept hardware of LTE/WiGig interworking heterogeneous network.
