Preliminarily Propagation Loss Evaluation of Core-Top Etched Waveguide for Step-Core LP21 Mode Converter

(in English) Multi-mode division multiplexing (MDM) has been researched as next generation transmission system technology. Among them, MMI mode converter is attractive because of its relatively simple structure, and we have proposed LP21 mode converter that utilized multi-mode interference in, not only lateral, transverse direction. To attain this step-core structure, the core-top is etched down, however, the top-etch process especially in plasma may cause critical damage that results in enormous propagation loss. To verify this issue preliminarily, propagation loss of core-top etched Si/SiO2 waveguide was evaluated in this paper.
