Do Japanese EFL learners make use of animacy information when parsing an object relative clause? -- A comparison between auditory and visual presentation --

(in English) This study investigated the use of animacy information when intermediate-level Japanese EFL learners parse a spoken and written object relative clause (ORC) sentence. 20 stimuli and 65 fillers were made for Experiment 1 in which 57 participants listened to a sentence and then answered a comprehension question. The stimuli’s critical manipulation involved the matrix noun phrase (NP), animate or inanimate. Experiment 2 aimed to examine whether 24 Japanese EFL learners make use of animacy information when processing the same stimuli as Experiment 1 in the experimenter-paced reading task. The results revealed that Japanese EFL learners make use of animacy information when parsing a spoken ORC sentence and a written ORC sentence within a set time. In addition, the upper-level participants more accurately answered comprehension questions in Experiment 1. These results indicate that Japanese EFL learners perform agent or theme role assignment to NPs and syntactic processing simultaneously. Furthermore, the higher the proficiency is, the more accurate the processing is.
