What do koto- and toiu-koto-clauses refer?

In this presentation, I examine the usage and distribution of two types of Japanese complement clauses: koto- and toiu-koto-clauses. In many examples, they have similar interpretation and toiu seems to be optional. In inferential constructions, however, only toiu-koto-clause is acceptable. I propose that it is because toiu-koto-clause can refer to “information state”, in addition to “event” and “fact”. |
