Novel Design and Organic Device Applications of n-Type Semiconducting Polymers Tsuyoshi Michinobu (Tokyo Tech) OME2015-88 |

Novel n-type semiconducting polymers were developed and applied to various electronic devices. First, fullerene (C60) polymers were successfully synthesized by the azide-alkyne cycloaddition polymerization with a carefully designed comonomer. The resulting fullerene polymers showed n-type performances in the polymer memory characteristics. Secondly, a [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) was employed as a new postfunctionalization method of creating highly cyanated n-type semiconducting polymers. A change in the energy levels from p-type to n-type characters was demonstrated by the thin film transistor (TFT) performances. Lastly, benzobisthiadiazole (BBT)-based narrow band gap semiconducting polymers were synthesized by Pd-catalyzed polycondensation. Their charge polarity in TFTs could be controlled by the comonomer structures, heteroatom substitutions, and side chain engineering. Furthermore, fullerene-free polymer solar cells were fabricated by using the BBT-based n-type semiconducting polymers. |
