Narrative Map Creation with Pseudo-Haptics for Promoting Narrative Comprehension
Kazuaki Umetsu, Akihiro Kashihara (UEC) ET2015-144
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A drop in Japanese reading comprehension has been pointed out. It is hard for younger Japanese to read sentences with considerable thought. In comprehending narratives, it is particularly important to read between the lines such as the characters’ feelings and background to uncover the intention of the narratives. This paper addresses the issue how to promote reading and understanding between the lines. Our approach to this issue is to propose a narrative map that includes concepts specified in the narrative and a concept embedded in between the lines, and to help learners compose this map by reading the narrative. In order to enhance an awareness of the embedded concept and the narrative intention, we also present pseudo haptic feedback on the map operation. In addition we have developed tablet-based system with the narrative map composition, and have conducted a case study whose results suggest the effectiveness.
