Within Japan’s compulsory education system, “information moral education” has been increasingly promoted since the 1990s in order “to address the looming prospect of an information society.” However, in recent years, there have been claims that every challenge faced in the context of an information society has been assimilated into information moral education, and that in terms of content, the field has grown more complicated by attempting to be all things to all people. Thus, teachers and other staff involved in compulsory education can still be seen to be confused over the lack of formal policies for what, specifically, to be teaching children and what these students should be learning. Also, in addition to the fact that fostering the morals handled by information moral education takes considerable time, there is considerable scope for argument as to whether the morality thus far dealt with under the compulsory education system will be of use as measures to prevent and solve problematic Internet use. Therefore, as a school-based approach to Internet addictions and other online problems, this study aims to build a simpler educational model by placing the basis on “safety” rather than “morality” in order to realize more effective and clear educational practices. |
