We have increased the temporal resolution of ultrasonic imaging to more than 1 kHz for accurate measurement of tissue dynamics. In high-frame-rate ultrasound, unfocused beams are used in transmission, and the lateral resolution of the obtained ultrasonic image is degraded when the conventional beamforming method is used. Recently, adaptive beamforming is intensively studied for improvement of the lateral resolution in ultrasonic imaging. Although an adaptive beamformer suppresses undesired signals using ultrasonic echoes received by individual transducer elements, the computational complexity is higher than conventional delay and sum beamforming because of calculation of the spatial covariance matrix obtained from the received ultrasonic data. To improve the condition of the spatial covariance matrix, sub-array averaging is used in conventional adaptive beamforming. On the other hand, we have shown that the computational complexity of the adaptive beamformer could be reduced significantly by using the adaptive beamformer with sub-aperture beamforming. However, our beamformer does not use sub-array averaging, and the condition of the covariance matrix may be worse than that in conventional adaptive beamforming. In the present study, a strategy was examined for implementing sub-array averaging into our adaptive beamformer used with sub-aperture beamforming to improve the condition of the spatial covariance matrix. |
