This paper proposes a psychological plausible model of acceptability judgement that implements a reconceptualization of it based on Item Response Theory in broad sense. In the proposed model, factors contributing to acceptability rating are divided into three distinct sorts, $E$-, $C$- and $R$-dimensions, where $E$ specifies the intrinsic properties of linguistic expressions given to a set of ``raters'' $R$, who process them under a set of ``textual contexts'' $C$, or ``contexts in narrow sense.''
To put more concretely, when a set of linguistic expressions $E = set{e_1, e_2, ldots, e_n}$ are given to a set of human raters $R=set{r_1, r_2, ldots, r_N}$. The proposed model allows different raters, say $r_i$ and $r_j$, to respond differently to the same stimulus $e_k$, even if they share $C = set{c_1, c_2, ldots, c_m}$ as far as $r_i$ and $r_j$ have different potentials to respond to stimuli. Observed differences of response reflect differences in ``interpretational strategies,'' or different propensities to respond to a linguistic stimulus (composed of an expression $e_i$ embedded in a particular textual context $c_i$). This modeling is new in that it rejects the hypothesis of ``response homogeneity among raters/subjects,'' the crucial assumption held by linguists nearly unanimously. |
