| （英） | Many previous syntactic studies regard honorifics (particularly, in Korean and Japanese) as agreement phenomena just as subject-verb agreement in Indo-European languages. However, there are some counterarguments to this view from the perspective of observing language data as well as establishing a theory of grammar in human language. Several previous studies argue that there exist quite a few counterexamples that show honorifics are not necessarily realized in accordance with agreement. Along this line (i.e. no honorification-as-agreement), the present study provides two pieces of evidence to challenge the view of honorification-as-agreement. First, the present study explores a spoken corpus transcribed into Korean to see whether or not the constituents agree with each other in terms of honorification. Second, the present study conducts acceptability judgment testing to examine whether or not Korean native speakers respond to agreement of honorifics sensitively. These examinations reveal that there are very few empirical findings supporting honorification-as-agreement. Instead, the present study argues that honorification is (i) a matter of acceptability rather than grammaticality and (ii) a matter of tendency rather than restriction. In addition, the current analysis substantiates that honorification operates according to linguists’ expectations only in conversations between speakers and hearers and supports the existence of obligatory honorification. | |
