Study on Prevention and Life Support of Severe Work-related Accidents -- Work-related Accident Analysis and Proposal of Countermeasures --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Five thousand spinal cord injuries occur every year in Japan. They are a burden on the patients because it can be difficult to recover completely from their paralysis and pain. This study analyzed features of 387 cases of work-related spinal cord injuries for the purpose of clarifying countermeasures to them. The results were as follows. 1.Many work-related spinal cord injuries occur in the construction, tertiary, manufacturing industries, as well as the transportation and traffic/freight handling industry. 2.Many men and older workers have those injuries. 3.While many falls to a lower level are caused by “Truck”, “Ladder,” et al. and “Roof, beam, purlin, crossbeam, and triangular frame of a thatched roof,” many falls on the same level are caused by “passageway”, “working floor and running board” and “environment” et al. 4.Falls from a lower position account for a large percentage. 5.With respect to sick and injured body parts, cervical injuries account for a large percentage. Furthermore, to consider concrete and effective countermeasures, we extracted 3 typical cases of work-related spinal cord injuries by narrowing data from a point of industry (small classification), type of accidents, and object caused accidents. We considered countermeasures to spinal cord injuries based on the engineering and human countermeasures to work-related accidents that JNIOSH has studied.
