Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Introduction: Recently, there has been a growing interest among scientists in the mechanism of developmental the fetal brain. Primly reflex, facial and eye movement in maternal uterus have been investigated using robotic model or animal experiments. Ultrasonography (USG) and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide non-invasive techniques for studying fetal brain development in humans. We present the three-dimensional reconstruction (3D) and quantitative imaging data of fetal brain white matter and grey matter from USG and MRI data
Methods: 4 patients were selected for this study that has been approved by the local ethics committee (H25-137). We acquired 3D ultrasound data (1) using a Voluson E10 (GE Healthcare), and Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) data using a 1.5T scanner (Signa HD xt Ver15 M4A, GE Health care). The data in DICOM format were imported into Slicer. We segmented four anatomical structures: the choroid plexus, the cerebrum, the white matter and the gray matter. The choroid plexus and cerebrum were segmented from the USG data using the Model Maker. The fetal gray and white matter were segmented from the DWI data using the threshold tool. We used Slicer to compute the volume of the segmented structures, and the Marching Cubes algorithm to generate 3D surface models of the anatomical structures.
Results: (1) Segmentation of USG: the volume of the choroid plexus, and the cerebrum 12 and 19 weeks; 3.81, 12.03 cc, and 0.21, 4.69 cc. (2) Segmentation of DWI: the volume of both gray and white matter at 36 and 40 weeks; 57.00 , 79.12cc, and 19.57, 191.76cc. Conclusions: We could show that the 3DSlicer helped visualize the formation of the fetal brain, and could measure volume of a part brain. We believe this method combined with USG or DWI might be helpful to determine the developmental fetal brain.
