Analysis of the Effects of Biased Traffic Pattern and Node Resource Allocation on the Robustness of Networks against Cascading Failure
Shimpei Tsuji, Sho Tsugawa (Tsukuba Univ.) CQ2016-98
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Cascading failure is a large-scale catastrophic failure of nodes in a network triggered by failures of a small number of nodes, and it has been considered as a serious problem in our society. In this paper, we analyze the effects of traffic patterns among nodes on cascading failure in a network. We perform simulation of cascading failure using a biased traffic pattern where each node generates traffic to a specific sink node. Our simulation results show that the biased traffic pattern in a network can significantly affect cascading failure triggered by a failure of a single node with the highest load, which increases the damage of the cascading failure to the network. Moreover, we examine methods for increasing robustness of networks against cascading failure through tuning of tolerance parameter of each node, which determines the capacity of the node. Our proposed approach is allocating relatively high values of tolerance parameter to the nodes with low load, and allocating relatively low values of tolerance parameter to the nodes with high load. We show that the robustness of networks can be efficiently improved using our proposed approach.
