Twelve-month-olds already know that word-object relationship is constant across different situations

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) For example, we label an apple with a word apple either when it is on a table on its own, or when it is in a basket with some other fruits. We conducted three experiments to investigate whether 12-month-olds understand that word-object relationship is constant across different situations. In Experiment 1, after infants were habituated to the scene in which just one novel object (target) lay before a female model who labeled it with a novel word, infants saw two test scenes, consistent and inconsistent, in which the model appeared with another novel object in addition to the target object. In the consistent test scene, the model labeled the target object with the same word. In the inconsistent scene, the model applied the word to the novel object ignoring the target she had labeled during habituation phase. Twelve-month-olds looked longer at the inconsistent scene than the consistent scene. Experiments 2 and 3 confirmed that 12-month-olds does not expect that either the same nonverbal behavior (Experiment 2) or the same vocal emotional expressions (Experiment 3) should be directed to the same object across different situations. These findings indicated that 12-month-olds expect labeling-object relationship, but neither behavior-object nor emotional expression-object relationships, to be constant across different situations.
