In a rule-based natural language question-answering system, input sentences are transformed into meta-form format which can handle meaning and logic, and then logical processing such as inference is performed. Nowadays as computational intelligence has been becoming a mainstream of AI research, those rule-based systems are often pejoratively called GOFAI (Good Old Fashioned AI). However, a rule-based method is thought to be more efficient in many cases than CI when we need to simulate "logic" as a part of function of natural intelligence. Because with a rule-based method, we can check and adjust logic which was generated by the system and/or should be introduced into the system relatively easier, and also we can construct a system with less computational resources than with CI. On the other hand, there exist many difficulties in implementing rule-based natural language processing system with semantic parsing. One of the difficulties is processing of relatively complex sentences. Though an input sentence is much complexed, it must be consisted of one or more simple sentence(s) which has one subject and one predicate. Thus a method to divide complex sentence into simple sentences can promote a research of natural language processing especially in rule-based NLP. In this article I propose a method of Multiplied Semantic Expansion(MSE) for semantic parsing as a model to construct a rule-based natural language question-answering system. |
