Ku-band Vector-Sum Phase Shifter Using LC-Type PPF With Adjustable Operating Frequency

(in English) Recently many vector-sum phase shifters designed with cost-effective silicon process have been reported, featuring their excellent phase error performance [1,2]. In the reported vector-sum phase shifters, RC-PPF (Resister and Capacitor type Poly Phase Filter) are commonly used as a quadrature signal generator. However RC-PPF tends to have small gain and large noise due the loss of resisters inside PPF. It leads to the deteriorated performance of phase shifter and limits the application of this circuit. In order to improve gain and noise performance of phase shifter, we propose LC-PPF (Inductor and Capacitor type PPF) where no resister is used. Also in order to overcome the disadvantage of LC-PPF in terms of narrower bandwidth for quadrature signal generation, an adaptive biasing technique was introduced to active circuit part of the phase shifter. For the proof of concept, we fabricated Ku-band vector-sum phase shifter with LC-PPF using 65nm CMOS process, and successfully demonstrated that the proposed technique works for better gain and less noise by 3dB, and operating frequency of more than 10%.
