Effect of focus scanning repetition frequency in high-intensity focused ultrasound exposure on sonochemical reaction

(in English) High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) permits on achieving energy deposition in a non-invasive manner. Such intense acoustic fields can induce temperature rise as well as acoustic cavitation. This last phenomenon is known to generate radical oxygen species (ROS), triggering the anti-cancer properties of sonosensitive substances. To optimize the generation of cavitation is a key point to reduce the HIFU exposure dose and consequently increase the safety of this method. In this particular study, a focus scanning technique is employed to widen the size of the cavitation cloud. The observations of the generated ROS via luminol reaction shows that this method does not maximize the volume exposed to ROS produced by cavitation. However, it is demonstrated that the timing of the sonication sequence plays a major role.
