In order to explore late L2ers’ acquisition of unique-to-L2 constructions which can only be acquired through implicit learning, a Visual World Paradigm (VWP) is conducted on 30 high proficiency late Dutch-Mandarin learners (L2ers) and 30 native Mandarin speakers (L1ers). In the current study, nominal phrases have three conditions: C1 [Num+Cl+N] as the base line, C2 [Num+Cl+Adj+N], and C3 [Num+Adj+Cl+N]. Both typical count nouns and mass nouns were used and matched on their lexical frequency and first syllable. Four pictures presented in each trial: P1 with mass objects in the Adj-consistent size, P2 with individual count objects, P3 with groups/portions of count objects, and P4 with mass objects in the Adj-inconsistent size. Participants were asked to choose one out of the four pictures presented on a screen based on the instructions from the headphones (‘From following pictures, please choose + NP’). The changes of their fixation proportions in each picture along the input of NPs were analysed. The results show that even though slower than L1ers, late L2ers can on-line use the unique-to-L2 structures to build anticipations: the Adj-Cl order evoked mass/plural-preferred anticipations before the onset of the nouns on both L1ers and L2ers. The findings support the Competition Model that late L2ers can eventually acquire unique-to-L2 constructions. |
