Under production-based models of language prediction, people use their production system for prediction, and an enhanced use of the production system will facilitate prediction. We tested this hypothesis by comparing people?s predictive eye movements when they did or did not shadow sentences. The models predict shadowing should facilitate prediction but interfere with integration, because prediction and production are assumed to share mechanisms while integration and production are not. Native British English speakers listened to sentences containing a highly predictable word, while viewing words or objects representing the predictable target (bee), its phonological competitor (bean), or an unrelated distractor (cat). We presented words in the first experiment, and objects in the second experiment. One half of the experiment involved the shadow task. Predictive eye movements to the target occurred earlier in the shadow task than in the listen task in the first experiment, while this time-course was similar in both tasks in the second experiment. Predictive eye movements to the competitor occurred earlier in the shadow task than in the listen task in the second experiment, while the competitor effect did not occur in either task in the first experiment. Earlier predictive eye movements in the shadow vs. listen task support prediction by production. Thus, production can facilitate prediction, but it may be affected by the type of context in which comprehension takes place. |
