The current study examines heritage Chinese speakers’ linguistic knowledge of relative clauses (RCs) in Chinese in terms of their comprehension and production. Previous heritage language studies have suggested that the key factors for heritage language attrition are the age of arrival and language environment. A production task and a comprehension task were conducted to six heritage Chinese speakers living in Japan. Results of the experiments showed that both native Chinese speakers and heritage Chinese speakers generally produced Subject-RCs using passives, even when Object-RCs were expected, and that heritage Chinese speakers had difficulty with Object-RCs, which can be explained by the structural distance hypothesis (SDH) but not by the linear distance hypothesis (LDH). Moreover, production data of heritage Chinese speakers such as well-formed noun phrase (NP) modifications without RCs partially indicate heritage language attrition. |
