[Invited Talk] Spatial and Planar Optical Circuit for Space Division Multiplexed Network

(in English) Space division multiplexing (SDM) technology is a possible solution for future ultra-large-scale backbone networks because it offers large transmission capacity of a multiple of the spatial channel count. For making SDM viable in real long-haul networks, the SDM-compatible photonic node devices are key components. Here we describe a spatial and planar optical circuit (SPOC) platform that integrates free space optics with optical waveguides. This platform brings out the advantages of both the optical waveguides and free-space-optics, which is highly suitable for SDM-compatible photonic node devices. We demonstrate wavelength selective switches (WSSs) with core-by-core switching and dynamic gain equalizer (DGE) for multi-core erbium doped fiber amplifier by using SPOC platform.
