The goal of the paper is to present what the ideal Forwarding
Information Base (FIB) for realizing a fast NDN forwarding engine on a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computer is supposed to be. This paper theoretically and empirically analyzes data structures and algorithms for a FIB from perspectives of whether they can be stored on fast memory devices, such as CPU caches, and whether access latency to data constituting the FIBs can be hidden. Through the analysis, we choose
a hash table-based FIB for fast NDN forwarding engines. Finally, the paper proposes a speculative hash table lookup method to hide Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) access latency for the hash table-based FIB. A prototype of the NDN forwarding engine, including the proposed lookup method, is implemented. Using the prototype, we reveal that the proposed method improves the CPU cycle consumed by FIB lookup by 33.1% compared to existing FIBs. |
