Fast PU inter mode selection method utilizing variance of motion vectors of the neighboring CUs

(in English) In recent years, video image resolution is greatly enhanced such as the start of trial broadcasting of 8K Ultra HDTV. H.265/HEVC, standardized for the high definition video in 2013, repeats inter-prediction for various candidate PUs, so that the required huge amount of computation is a major implementation obstacle. In this paper, we propose a method of drastically reducing candidate PU by using the variance of motion vectors detected in the four neighboring CUs of the target CU. It shows that the proposed method is implemented in HM-10.0 and the encoding time can be reduced by 40% or more.
