On the basis of the original definition of mechanical quality factor (Q factor), in previous studies, we developed a method for measuring the Q factors of polymers under high-amplitude flexural vibration, and found that poly phenylene sulfide (PPS) exhibited relatively high Q factors. It indicates that PPS is potentially applicable as vibrating bodies of ultrasonic devices. To gain a deeper understanding on the mechanical-loss characteristics of PPS, in this study, we modify the former method to measure the Q factors in longitudinal vibration. The Q factor equals the ratio of the reactive energy stored in a small region of the sample to the dissipated energy when the elastic waves propagate along this region, and both of them can be obtained from the vibration velocities on the outer surface, and the mechanical constants of the material. The experimental results demonstrate that the Q factor of PPS exceeds 400 in longitudinal vibration. Besides, through thermal treatment, it is capable of enhancing the Q factors of PPS. |
