Haze removal algorithm for time-varying haze images

(in English) Outdoor images are often degraded by some atmospheric phenomena such as haze, fog, smoke, etc. The algorithm of recovering contrast and color fidelity of such images is called haze removal. The purpose of this manuscript is to propose fast haze removal algorithm designed for the time-series images captured by fixed point camera such as surveillance. In the proposed method, the difference information of successive two images is used for updating the transmission map, although only the first image should be de-hazed by using a single-image haze removal algorithm, which we used Kaiming He’s method, or dark channel prior. The merit of our method is twofold: one is to reduce the processing time of generating the transmission map significantly, and the other is to remove the time-varying haze more effectively than the conventional single-image algorithm. It is verified through our experiments that the temporal update of transmission map is 10 times faster than the conventional transmission map generation in He’s method.
