Social behavior of a robot based on the social nature of Octodon degus

(in English) Social behaviors are crucial for interactions between people. Similarly, social robots are expected to have social behaviors in human-robot interactions. We address a question what are requirements for social robots to have smooth interactions with a human. We listed possible responses that a social robot produces in facing with humans based on behavioral research of the mammalian Octodon degus. Octodon degus is known to exhibit rich social behaviors among rodents. In this study we consider three items which are needs to be implemented; (1) to infer emotions from facial expressions of humans, (2) to express emotion by voice and (3) body movements. We implemented a robot with the above three items using a commercially available, programmable robot, the Cozmo. After implementing social behaviors to the Cozmo robot, we listed several items to be done for achieving social robot development. Here we report our implementation results and possible future study topics.
