Understanding the functions of synonymous onomatopoeia can be a major problem in learning Japanese language for Japanese learners. In this research, considering about their high similarities, differences among the meanings and functions of three most frequently used synonymous onomatopoeia: "shikkari", "chanto", and "kichinto", have been clarified by analyzing the usage frequency, genre preferences, as well as Co-occurrence words based on the "Balanced corpus of Contemporary written Japanese (BCCWJ)”. Three conclusions can be obtained through the present corpus-based analysis. Firstly, objective of distinguishing these three words through the corpus usage frequency cannot be achieved. Secondly, we can distinguish them in terms of the genre preferences. Finally, while taking both of the Co-occurrence and genre preferences into account, it can be shown as follows: "shikkari" is mainly used in the case where tasks are completed beyond what we have expected through high physical load; "chanto" basically means that tasks are completed although they were considered an obvious thing to do owning to the low cognitive load; while "kichinto" is mostly used in public or formal situations, where tasks are completed as expected in spite of the difficulties and high load. This study is supposed to improve the handling of synonymous onomatopoeia needed in the practical Japanese language education. |
