Previous studies have suggested that memory retrieval and expectation for upcoming linguistic input are importantly participate into sentence processing (Gibson, 2000; Hale, 2001). While the studies about each of these effects, the interaction between them are investigated recently (Levy and Keller, 2013; Staub, 2010). In this paper, we investigated how the working memory and expectation for upcoming words participate into Japanese sentence processing by a self-paced reading experiment using prepositional wh-phrases (the usage of wh-phrase: Ono and Nakatani, 2014; Sugi, 2010) as the trigger for both the locality-based difficulties, which is explained under the memory-based theory (Gibson, 2000; Lewis and Vasishth, 2005), and the expectation-based facilitations, which is explained under the expectation-based model (Levy, 2008; Konieczny and Döring, 2003). The results confirmed the ability of wh-phrases to cause locality effects in Japanese. We failed to observe expectation effects, which is attributable to the manipulation of expectation strength. The lack of interaction between two effects implies the separate participation of memory retrieval and expectation into sentence comprehension. |
