Japanese-speaking children are reported to begin producing passive sentences without –ni phrases (i.e., short passives) at the age of 2. Some experimental studies have also shown that 3-5-year-olds exhibit adult-like interpretations of Japanese short passives. The methodologies of these studies may have put too great a cognitive burden on very young participants, and children younger than 3 may in fact be able to interpret passive sentences. To address this problem, the present study employs the preferential looking paradigm using eye-tracking technology to examine comprehension of Japanese short passives by 2-3-year-olds. We found that children looked at congruent events longer when they heard active sentences with a verb such as push and kick, but at incongruent ones longer when they encountered passive sentences with the same verbs. This result suggests that they correctly interpret active sentences with push and kick but not passive sentences, possibly due to the Lexical-ordering Strategy. |
